Commemoration of World Press Freedom Day – 2026

The program organized to commemorate World Press Freedom Day (May 3rd) was held on May 11, 2026, at the auditorium of the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI).

A scholarly discussion titled “Media Freedom in Sri Lanka within Changing Political Contexts” was conducted during the event. The following key figures shared their professional insights:

Lasantha Ruhunage (Senior Journalist), representing the Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association.

Lasantha de Silva (Convener), representing the Free Media Movement.

Mohammed Fairooz, representing the Sri Lanka Muslim Media Forum.

Sri Gajan represented The Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Media Alliance.

Sulochna Ramiah Mohan (Senior Journalist).

The session focused on the current challenges facing the media industry, the evolution of the media landscape in Sri Lanka, and the future obstacles journalists must navigate as a nation. A large number of representatives from various media organizations and professional associations participated in the event.

This program was organized by the Sri Lanka Press Institute in collaboration with The Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka, the Free Media Movement, and the Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association.
