The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) convened a discussion today, 9 June 2026, at its premises to explore the current challenges and future of the Right to Information (RTI) in Sri Lanka.
The expert panel featured Attorney-at-Law Disanayake Dassanayake, Attorney-at-Law Sankhitha Gunaratne (Head of Legal and Governance, Verité Research), Devika Nagaravatta (Center for Women’s Development), Rahul Samantha (Journalist), and Sivalingam Sivakumar (Journalist).
The discussion brought together a diverse audience of journalists, civil society representatives, media organizations, and advocates committed to advancing transparency and accountability.
Panelists highlighted the challenges faced in implementing the Right to Information across multiple sectors and emphasized that strengthening the Right to Information Commission remains a key responsibility of the government.
A strong consensus emerged from the discussion: citizens, civil society organizations, and journalists must work together and raise their collective voices to further strengthen and protect the right to information in Sri Lanka.
