International Human Rights Day 2025 | Devi Documentary Screening and Discussion

SLPI and the Kingdom of the Netherlands Marked International Human Rights Day 2025 with the Screening of Devi

The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI), in partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, successfully commemorated International Human Rights Day 2025 with a special film screening and discussion held on Thursday, 11 December 2025, at the SLPI Auditorium. The event brought together journalists, diplomats, human rights advocates, and artists for an evening dedicated to dialogue on justice and human dignity. The programme was attended by H.E. Wiebe de Boer, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and Mr. Kumar Nadesan, Chairman of SLPI, underscoring the shared commitment of both institutions in championing human rights through storytelling and public engagement.

The screening featured Devi, a powerful Nepali documentary directed by Subina Shrestha, which portrayed the true story of a wartime rape survivor and her pursuit of justice. The film offered a compelling and emotionally resonant space for reflection on gender-based violence, conflict, and accountability.

A rich and thought-provoking discussion followed the screening, moderated by Ms. Anomaa Rajakaruna, renowned film director and human rights activist. Her insights helped frame the film within broader regional and global conversations on justice mechanisms, survivor resilience, and the essential role of media in fostering understanding and change.

As co-organizers, SLPI and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening public dialogue, promoting human rights awareness, and supporting platforms that amplify stories of courage and truth.
