Webinars on Emergency Regulation and Media Freedom

The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) together with the Press Complaints Commission of Sri Lanka (PCCSL)  and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH conducted a timely webinar series for journalists on  “Emergency Regulation and Media Freedom”. The webinar series was conducted via the Zoom platform in both Sinhala and Tamil languages. The objective of the online sessions was to enable a discussion and raise awareness of the current regulation of emergency and what it implies for media freedom.

 The Tamil webinar was held on the 23rd September 2021 at 7.00 PM. Resource persons for the event were Senior Lecturer, Head of the Department of Media Studies, University of Jaffna, Dr. S. Raguram, Attorney at Law, Former Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Javid Yusuf, and Senior Journalist & Convenor of Jaffna Press Club, Mr. R.Thayaparan.

The Sinhala webinar was held on the following day, 24th September 2021 with key speakers, Attorney at law and university lecturer Mr. Thishya Weragoda, and the Convenor of the Free Media Movement, Ms. Seetha Ranjanee. The two programs were moderated by journalist Ms. Thanujah Nagarajah and Complaints Officer Mr. Kamal Liyanarachchi respectively. The programs were attended by a total of over 130 participants.
