The Narrative Journalism – News in Tales Workshop, held on 21 and 22 January 2026 at Amari Hotel Colombo, brought together over 40 journalists from across Sri Lanka for an intensive exploration of storytelling in news reporting.
The two-day workshop focused on strengthening narrative journalism techniques that go beyond facts and headlines, encouraging journalists to add context, depth, and a human-centred perspective to their stories. Through discussions and practical sessions, participants examined how storytelling can enhance public understanding while upholding ethical and professional journalistic standards.
The programme was jointly organised by the Canadian High Commission and Canadian High Commission, in collaboration with Newsreel Asia and the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI).
The workshop was ceremonially inaugurated by Her Excellency Isabelle Martin, Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, highlighting Canada’s continued support for media development, press freedom, and ethical journalism in the region.
By bringing together journalists from diverse backgrounds and media institutions, the workshop contributed to strengthening independent journalism in Sri Lanka, reinforcing the importance of narrative-driven reporting in capturing real-life experiences and amplifying voices that often go unheard.
