Capacitating Future Journalists on Climate Change Reporting 2026
The Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) successfully concluded the two-day Climate Journalism Course held on 24–25 June 2026 under the AGILE Programme, implemented in partnership with Fojo Media Institute, Linnaeus University, Sweden.
The programme brought together 43 undergraduate journalism and mass communication students from six leading higher education institutions:
University of Colombo
University of Sri Jayewardenepura
Sri Palee Campus, University of Colombo
University of Kelaniya
Sri Lanka College of Journalism
The course was facilitated by Ms. Kamanthi Wickramasinghe, an experienced journalist, who guided participants through key aspects of climate journalism, including climate change reporting, storytelling techniques, data-driven journalism, ethics, safety in reporting, and solutions journalism.
The programme aims to strengthen the capacity of future journalists to report accurately, responsibly, and effectively on climate and environmental issues. Following the course, selected students will participate in a three-month mentorship programme, where they will receive guidance from both academic and industry mentors to produce and publish original climate journalism stories.
SLPI extends its sincere appreciation to Fojo Media Institute, Linnaeus University, Sweden, for its continued partnership and support in empowering the next generation of journalists in Sri Lanka.
