Shanmugam Thavaseelan was harassed by Army officers at Alampil in Mullativu district. He was reporting on the issue of acquiring a graveyard of LTTE fighters which had been under the military since 2009 to use permanatly for several purposes by the military. The Army officers blocked him from filming the area and demanded him to show the footage. The incident had taken place when he was returning after meeting some of the Alampil residents who were angered due to the decision of government officials. Upon refusal to provide information, Thavaseelan was escorted to the military camp in the area.

Other journalists in the area was alerted to the harassment and Thavaseelan was released from the military camp due to their intervention.
