The 19th and 20th Editions of the Journalism Awards for Excellence programme organised by The Editors’ Guild in partnership with the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI) was kicked off successfully with the presentation of Awards on last Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at the ‘Blue’, Colombo Hilton Hotel.Over fifty awards and merit certificates were given out in appreciation of the outstanding service of the journalists for the last two years . An independent panel of judges comprising media practitioners and academics picked the recipients from a total of 18 dailies and 18 weeklies in the three language streams – Sinhala, Tamil and English. Journalism Awards for Excellence was very well-received by the participants, as it recognized professionalism in the print media and rewarded excellence. Moreover, The Guild also presented awards for Lifetime Achievements and those defending press freedom. The four recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Awards for 2019 & 2020 are Mr. Upali Fonseka, Mr. D. P. Wickramasinghe, Mrs. Pushpa Rowel and Mr. S. C. Weerasinghe (Posthumous).

Described as the Sri Lankan equivalent of the Pulitzer, the Excellence in Journalism Awards is the most prestigious annual programme for journalists, which recognizes outstanding work and rewards those deserving merit.

The Journalism Awards Program was started in 1999 by The Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka following the “Colombo Declaration on Media Freedom and Social Responsibility.” In 2004, Sri Lanka

Press Institute was inaugurated and from then on the Awards Night was jointly organized by TEGOSL and the SLPI. The goal of the Awards Ceremony has been to shape the future of journalism in the country by improving the skills needed for excellence, recognizing and rewarding achievements and high standards as well as focusing on professional ethics.
