8 worldwide opportunities with deadlines in December

With the time to create your next vision board quickly approaching, many journalists are starting to consider what new career goal they want to take on in 2023. Check out these competitions, fellowships and festivals with deadlines in December that are open to journalists globally to get a head start.

Media innovation fellowship

Deadline: December 1, 2022

Journalists working for news organizations in a business, technology or leadership capacity can apply for the Nieman Foundation for Journalism and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society’s journalism innovation fellowship. Fellows will spend an academic year at Harvard University carrying out research projects.

#CrisesofInequality media contest

Deadline: December 4, 2022

The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development is seeking print and broadcast journalists working in any language for its #CrisesofInequality Media Contest. Participants must submit stories that increase awareness of the urgency to build a new eco-social contract based on visions of justice, equality and sustainability.

Scholarship program 

Deadline: December 5, 2022

Professional journalists, bloggers and citizen journalists from countries in crisis or war can apply for Reporters Without Borders Germany’s Berlin Scholarship Program. Scholars will complete a comprehensive training program in digital security issues relevant to their work. The program will cover travel, visa costs and more.

Cancer journalism competition 

Deadline: December 7, 2022

The American Association for Cancer Research is accepting applications for the AACR June L. Biedler Prize for Cancer Journalism, which recognizes stories that enhance the public’s understanding of cancer, cancer research and policy. Entries must be in English or accurately translated into English.

Nonfiction book award

Deadline: December 8, 2022

Writers and authors of nonfiction books can compete for Columbia University’s J. Anthony Lukas Prize Project Awards, which recognizes excellence in nonfiction that exemplifies literary grace and commitment to serious research and social concern. Winners will receive cash prizes.

Documentary pitching contest 

Deadline: December 12, 2022

Sunny Side of the Doc’s Global Pitch is calling for documentary projects in an advanced stage of development with the financial commitment of at least one partner. Winners will receive EUR3,000 and two accreditations from #SSD23 in La Rochelle, France.

Mobile photography contest 

Deadline: December 16, 2022

Photographers who use mobile phone cameras as their medium can submit their images to the Mobile Photography Awards. A grand prize winner will receive US$3,000 and the MPA Photo Essay winner will be awarded US$500.

International film festival 

Deadline: December 31, 2022

The Hong Kong International Film Festival is accepting films completed after Jan. 1, 2022 in English or with English subtitles. Documentarians can submit their work for a chance to receive up to US$3,000.
